Yes … those were the exact words and no, it’s not the punchline to a joke. 🙂
Last night, the girls, Joseph and I went to Panera for dinner (then Target for shopping). In Panera, you order, then sit, they call your name, you get it and then eat. So we ordered. Then we found a table near the “back” of the restaurant. The “back” is only separated by a tall seat-back of a series of bench chairs.
When I say “tall” I mean tall. The girls can barely see over them when the stand on the bench.
So we’re eating our dinner and we hear a baby start screaming and crying. This, of course, makes the girls go into “full alert” mode. They are looking around and I Emily asks … “What color is that baby?” to which I respond I have no idea.
No, at this point I’m thinking she’s asking what color the baby is WEARING or something to that effect.
So we continue to eat and the baby continues to cry and whine (and is obviously NOT in our section of the restaurant). Soon enough the girls have had enough and HAVE to see for themselves where this baby is.
So the climb onto the bench and stand, look out over the top of the back of the bench and Abby, while standing up, turns her head to me and exclaims …
“It’s a white baby!”
So first, I nearly spit out all my food. Then, I feel my face flush (completely embarassed) and ask Abby to come down (and Emi too, fearing I’ll hear it again as she scrambles up to see). I told Abby that we don’t talk about people’s “color”.
My only saving grace in this is that she didn’t ask “why not?” because I’m not sure I could have answered her. I understand why not, because it doesn’t matter, but how to clear that in the mind of a 3 year old? Not sure.
In any case the baby screamed and cried the remainder of our time there (uhhhh….. couldn’t they have taken him or her OUT?) and then we finally left too.
you guys could be your own sitcom. that is the funniest story i have ever heard, and i could picture them standing up, looking for the baby to see what color it was. that was hilarious!!! Gramma Ethel says that whenever she gets to see the girls they so entertain her. Thanks Aimee, i feel like i know you and all 3 of my second cousins because of your blog. I love it. :0) Christine
