A full day at Old Salem

In 24 years in NC, I’ve gone to Old Salem at least a dozen (or more) times, but never actually INTO the buildings. We’ve shopped. We’ve strolled. We’ve walked and walked and walked but never actually toured.

So today, my Mom, and my three kids and I went to Old Salem. It was Joseph’s idea because he wanted a musket to replace the one he left out in the rain. 🙄 But it was a good idea too!

We actually did the tour and as part of that, went INTO the buildings! The girls were wonderful, Joseph was great, and Mom and I truly enjoyed the $21 tour.

We walked up hill (no, not both ways), but up hill for the first part of our journey, so that we could walk downhill the whole rest of the way. 😀 Good thinking too because it was hotter the later we were there and it was HARD going up the brick/cobblestone sidewalks with tree roots in the way and bricks popping up, etc. The stroller got stuck a few times. 😉

So, we actually started our tour at the Winkler Bakery. Busy place! 😉 The oven was being prepped for cooking. I can’t imagine cooking out of an oven like that, but it was on, it was hot and it was just about ready.

We then walked back down Main St. to the very first family home … can’t remember the name, but it’s the one that Steph used to work at! Ha! 😉 We went into another family home … Vogler? Then to the Single Brothers’ House, then the Boys’ School, then the Tavern where George Washington stayed overnight, then Joseph and Mom stopped at the Cobbler’s, then we went to one of the churches and from there, we parted ways for a few minutes.

The girls and I went to the chidlren’s museum and Joseph and Mom checked out the church and headed to the silversmith (who was out at the moment 🙁 ).

We toured through the Toy Museum a bit and the girls played in the Children’s Museum (very fun). We then headed back through the visitor’s center for a musket, a couple “canisters” of cookies and a last walk back out to the car.

All in all a VERY fun day. The girls were wiped out. Joseph thoroughly enjoyed himself. I can now say I’ve been IN Old Salem and so can Mom. 😀
