I participated in the freshman job shadow activity as part of Apex High School’s technology program. Three students participated, 2 of the 4 of us sniffling ALL day due to these lovely colds.
I thought the day was great. I have no *real* idea what the students thought of it. I had pre-hired a family to come in for a photography session. At the last minute, I got a “real” session too … the NEW President of the Apex Chamber of Commerce is one of MY former customers and she needed a headshot for the paper and for the Chamber website and she called me! So I fit her in during the kids’ part of the day so they’d get two examples.
I talked with them about all the other stuff I do — the not-actually-shooting-stuff and how that’s *almost* a bigger part of my day. We went through the entire shooting-proofing-processing-presenting cycle. They basically got to see the entire process (the way I do it) up close.
It really was a GREAT day for me because I got to share stuff that *I* love with interested kids. Now, granted they were all pretty quiet the entire time, but I think I opened them up a bit with Chick-fil-A for breakfast and Papa John’s pizza for lunch. 😉
They were in the studio from 9-3 (ish). I actually got a lot accomplished, too!
I plan to participate in the future (if they want me to) and I think I may offer to have an internship at the studio too for Juniors or Seniors — during the summer months. That should be interesting. 🙂 But not this year … that will wait one extra year. 🙂
