As of today, Ron and I have been together for 16 straight years! That means, no breakups, no “on a break” times or anything. A solid 16 years.
August 26, 1988 was our first date… ever. Seems like a lifetime ago and yet I can remember it in vivid detail. For an interesting perspective, it was over half my life ago. 🙂
It was the evening of the first football game of the season at North Forsyth High School. Ron and I were in the band, my first of 4 seasons and his last of 4 seasons. He, the Senior trumpet player and me the girl on the sidelines that played the bells. Couldn’t play the oboe in marching band, so I relied on my piano playing skills and moved to the percussion section for marching band.
It took nearly the entire night for him to ask me out. And it took a lot of encouragement from Robin Cardwell (now Harrison) before he’d even do it. And, wait… he didn’t ask me, rather told me. The conversation went like this.
Ron: “Are you going to Pizza Hut tonight?”
Me: “Not that I know of.”
Ron: “Well, you’re coming with me.”
Me: “Ok, but you have to meet my parents.”
And, thus started the whole Ron and Aimee saga that continues through to today.
By the way, I now know where Joseph gets his negotiating power. That night, Dad and I negotiated my curfew to 11:52pm, up from his 11:30pm suggested time and down from my midnight suggested time. 🙂 His philosophy? Nothing good happens after midnight. So when Joseph tries to make a deal on something you know which parent passed on that trait.
So, off we went, in his 1978 Blue Toyota Celica and “Ronnie ‘B’ Goode” front license plate.
