I met with Joseph’s teacher, his CCR teacher and the school Principal to discuss Joseph’s IEP. It’s an annual review. All three said they’ve seen a marked improvement in him since the first of this year and last year was a tremendous improvement. Woohoo! 😀
He is reading at a 4th grade level — WITH comprehension. 😀 That has been his #1 problem since Kindergarten. But, he’s at grade level, so that’s a relief!
He sucks, though, at spelling. His CCR teacher suggested that he may not be hearing all the sounds of words. Seriously, I believe her. We took Joseph to Project Enlightenment when he was 4 because he NEVER used the letter ‘S’ when it started a word. They said he was “fine” and not to worry, it would happen. It did, so I didn’t think anything of it, but honestly, I think they were wrong. I think that showed a potential issue and it just has never been caught.
What that issue is? Haven’t a clue, but “not hearing” sounds makes quite a bit of sense. And given Ron’s super-sensitive hearing, but lack of hearing in a crowded room, makes even more sense.
In any case, if anyone wants to buy Joseph a FRANKLIN SPELLER for Christmas, let me know. 😀 He apparently uses it all the time at school (and they are allowed to) and REALLY likes it. Hint Hint Hint.
Overall the teachers were very pleased and the IEP has been renewed for assistance of the same manner — Reading, Writing and Spelling for another year. Phew!
